Department Overview

The Department of Infectious Diseases specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of infections caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Symptoms vary depending on the site of infection. Common conditions we manage include:

• Emerging infectious diseases (e.g., COVID-19, influenza)

• Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, tuberculosis)

• Urinary tract infections (e.g., cystitis, pyelonephritis)

• Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., cellulitis)

• Central nervous system infections (e.g., meningitis)

• Sexually transmitted infections (e.g., HIV/AIDS, syphilis)

• Gastrointestinal infections,

• Travel medicine-related infections,

• Multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections

Our hospital is equipped with negative-pressure isolation rooms, ensuring high-standard isolation and treatment protocols to safeguard patient safety and infection control. The department integrates clinical care, infection control, and policy implementation to uphold healthcare quality and protect public health.

Epidemic Response & Public Health Initiatives

The Division of Infectious Diseases has been on the frontline of epidemic control, including:

• 2003 SARS outbreak – Responsible for fever clinics and isolation wards; implemented emergency response protocols, robust isolation, and infection prevention strategies that successfully prevented in-hospital transmission.

• COVID-19 pandemic (since 2020) – Established outdoor testing stations and community screening sites; oversaw contact tracing, case reporting, vaccination, and access control; managed dedicated COVID outpatient and inpatient services to ensure public health and patient safety.

• Seasonal influenza – Promotes vaccination campaigns and risk-based immunization strategies; partners with community health educators to raise awareness about respiratory disease prevention, helping to reduce severe cases and hospitalizations.

We hold regular cross-departmental epidemic prevention meetings to dynamically adjust response strategies and operational guidelines based on current public health developments.

Infection Control and Quality Improvement

Our division is also responsible for hospital-wide infection prevention, surveillance, and intervention, and actively participates in community infection control, long-term care facility infection management, and public health education. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, National Health Insurance Administration, and the Joint Commission of Taiwan, we implement and improve upon several key infection care and antibiotic stewardship programs:

1. Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP)

• Develop and enforce rational antibiotic use policies

• Collaborative antibiotic review by infectious disease physicians and clinical pharmacists

• Monitor antibiotic consumption and key metrics (DDD, DID)

• Conduct continuing medical education to improve prescribing practices

• Establish prevention guidelines for priority resistant pathogens (e.g., CRAB, CRE, VRE, MRSA)

• Use CDC-recommended tools and audit forms for surveillance and review

2. Healthcare Quality Improvement Programs

• Surveillance of:

  • Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)

  • Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI)

  • Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI)

• Targeted follow-up and feedback for units with abnormal infection rates

• Training of nursing staff in aseptic techniques

• Regular infection control audits

3. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Surveillance and Clinical Feedback

• Provide antimicrobial therapy recommendations based on hospital-wide susceptibility data

• Assist clinicians with antibiotic selection and treatment modifications

• Report MDRO cases to clinical teams with individualized treatment strategies
